Admission Requirements

For admission into the PhD program, an applicant must in addition to a good first degree (LLB), hold an LLM degree from Bayero University Kano or any other recognized university with a CGPA of at least 3.50 (on a scale of 0.00 to 5.00) or hold an MPhil with a minimum CGPA of 3.00.

An applicant who satisfied all conditions except the minimum CGPA, may be offered admission for

MPhil which may be upgraded to PhD where he/she obtained a 3.50 CGPA and his proposal is adjudged adequate otherwise he/she may be awarded only his Phil Degree. MPhil shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months. Notwithstanding the above requirements, an applicant may be required before admission to undergo such test as may be prescribed by the department on his/her proposed work. Admitted applicants may also be required to take such other prerequisite or concurrent courses and examinations as may be prescribed, subject to the control of the postgraduate school, Bayero University, Kano.

LLM International Law and Jurisprudence

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission into the LL. M program an applicant must satisfy the following:

He/she must have a Bachelor of Law (LL.B) Honors Degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 (on a scale of 0.00 – 5.00) from Bayero University, Kano or any recognized institution; or a minimum of 2.40 CGPA plus a Post-graduate diploma with a minimum of 3.00 CGPA.

i. He/she must have studied private and commercial law or related subjects at the undergraduate level; and any other relevant qualification acceptable to the Department of Private and Commercial Law and the Bayero University Postgraduate School in accordance with prescribed Guidelines.

ii. A minimum of five (5) credit passes, including English Language and Literature in English, at not more than two (2) sittings in SSC/GCE Ordinary Level or its equivalent.

iii. A minimum of two positive references as to character and learning to be submitted by the applicant. At least one of the references must be obtained from the applicant’s former lecturers.

iv. An applicant may also be considered where he/she possesses a good PGDPCL from Bayero

University or any similar qualification from recognized institution if he has a CGPA of less than 2.75 in his LLB Notwithstanding the above requirements, an applicant may be required before admission to undergo such test as may be prescribed by the department. Admitted applicant may also be required to take such other prerequisite or concurrent courses and examination as may be prescribed, subject to the approval of the postgraduate school, Bayero University, Kano.

MASTERS IN INTERNATIONAL LEGAL STUDIES (MILS)

Admission Requirements

i) In addition to the general admission requirements in paragraphs 2.4, 2.5 and 2.6, more particularly, paragraphs 2.5.1, 2.5.2 and 2.6.2(b) of the Bayero University General Regulations Governing Post graduate Studies, January, 2016 (herein after referred to as the ‘White Book, 2016’), an applicant, to be eligible for admission into the Masters in International Legal Studies (MILS) program must hold:

a. A minimum of second class lower degree in the relevant area from Bayero University, Kano or any other recognized university.

b. A Postgraduate Diploma in the relevant area not below classification of merit from area from

Bayero University, Kano or any other recognized university provided that the conditions prescribed for admission into Postgraduate Diploma Programme at Bayero University Kano are satisfied:

i. Must have obtained a Bachelor of Law (LL.B) degree with at least a third class honors degree,

(Minimum CGPA of 2.40 on the scale of 0.00-5.00), a good honors degree in relevant field of humanities for example Political Science, Sociology, Economics, Geography, Public Administration, Mass communication, History, English, Medicine, Sciences, from Bayero University, Kano or any other recognized university with at least a second class honors degree (minimum CGPA of 2.75 on the scale of 0.00-5.00).

ii. A Masters or Ph. D in all relevant areas outlined above in paragraph (a) above.

iii. A Postgraduate Diploma or certificate in addition to a first degree certificate with a minimum of third class (minimum CGPA of 2.40 on the scale of 0.00-5.00).

iv. Any other relevant qualification acceptable to the Department of International Law and

Jurisprudence and the Bayero University Postgraduate School in accordance with the general guidelines of the Bayero University, Kano Postgraduate Guidelines.

v. Any other relevant qualification acceptable to the Department of International Law and

Jurisprudence and the Bayero University Postgraduate School in accordance with the general guidelines of the Bayero University, Kano Postgraduate Guidelines.

c. A minimum of second class upper degree in a non-related area plus relevant professional qualifications obtained after passing a qualifying examination.

d. Any other qualifications deemed equivalent to (a), (b) and (c) above.

ii. Notwithstanding the above requirements, an applicant may be required, before admission, to undergo such test as may be prescribed by the Department of International Law & Jurisprudence on his/her proposed work. Admitted applicants may also be required to take such other pre-requisite or concurrent courses and examinations as may be prescribed, subject to the overall control of the

Postgraduate School, Bayero University, Kano.
